Pole dancing is a form of overall performance art, traditionally associated with strip clubs, which combines dancing and acrobatics centered around an upright pole. This form of art has been gaining a level of popularity as an effective form of fitness and mainstream entertainment, practiced by many people in gyms as well as in dedicated dance studios. A wide variety of amateur and professional competitions take place in many countries all over the world.
Pole dancing usually requires a lot of strength, overall flexibility and stamina. From a commercial pseudo-erotic environment, however, pole dance is usually performed less gymnastically as well as being used more like a prop in striptease, Go-Go or lap dancing, having the performer simply holding the pole or moving about it without performing acrobatics. Pole dancing correctly however, involves athletic moves for example climbs, spins, and body inversions utilizing the limbs to grip. Upper torso and core strength are necessary to attain proficiency, and rigorous training is recommended.
Pole dancing has become considered to be an accepted kind of exercise and could be used as both an aerobic and anaerobic workout. More schools and qualifications are becoming recognized.
